Lifetime Free Credit Cards in India: What 'Free' Really Means

Searching for a lifetime free credit card in India usually means you want no joining fee and no annual fee, year after year. Ads often mix “lifetime free”, “LTF”, “zero joining fee” and “first-year free”. Official fee tables are not the same thing — and a card can still cost you money after the joining line says Nil.

We re-read Federal Bank’s Scapia pages and Key Fact Sheet, Scapia’s explainer and homepage, YES BANK’s POP-CLUB page and credit-card MITC, plus HDFC Bank’s Swiggy and Tata Neu pages and BOBCARD’s Etihad Guest page, on 8 Nov 2026. Every fee below comes from those documents (see Sources). Apply Now links are only for cards on our credit cards page — here, Scapia and YES BANK POP-CLUB. Other cards appear as plain text. Also: Scapia benefits, Tata Neu Plus vs Infinity and Swiggy HDFC benefits.

Quick answer

A lifetime free credit card lists nil joining fee and nil annual fee, with no yearly spend needed to keep those two lines at zero. Other charges still apply. On 8 Nov 2026, Federal Bank’s Scapia Key Fact Sheet (v11, 30 Apr 2026) published both fees as Nil. YES BANK’s POP-CLUB product page marketed a “lifetime free offer”, while its MITC (CMITC_V18, 5 Oct 2026) lists joining NIL and an annual fee of INR 399 (ex-GST), waived at INR 1,50,000 spend in the 12 months before the anniversary — and says those fees “are not applicable for Lifetime Free cards”. Check your application screen. This is not financial advice; the bank decides approval and the version it issues you.

What “lifetime free” actually means

On an Indian credit-card fee table, lifetime free (LTF) is a claim about two lines only: the joining fee and the annual / membership / renewal fee. If both are published as Nil or Zero, and you do not need a spend target to keep them at zero, that is the published LTF version. It does not mean every other charge is zero.

  • Zero joining fee — you are not charged to get the card. An annual fee can still appear later.
  • First-year free, or a fee “reversed” as points — the bank still publishes a joining or renewal fee, then waives it for a year or credits welcome points equal to that fee if you transact in time.
  • Spend-based waiver — the fee is real, but renewal is waived if you spend a stated amount before renewal or the card anniversary.

YES BANK’s MITC prints a fee for each variant, then adds that “Joining and Annual membership fees are not applicable for Lifetime Free cards.” A card can have a published price and sometimes be issued under a separate lifetime-free offer. Read the application screen, not only the headline. The same MITC says terms can change at the bank’s discretion, in line with applicable law — so check the latest document before you spend as if the card will stay free forever.

LTF vs first-year-free vs paid

How it is soldWhat it usually meansExample verified on 8 Nov 2026
Lifetime free (nil + nil)Joining Nil and annual Nil, with no spend needed to keep those two lines at zeroFederal Bank Scapia — KFS v11 (30 Apr 2026): joining, annual and add-on fees Nil. Scapia explainer: “zero joining fees and zero annual fees”.
Zero joining, annual fee listedJoining Nil; an annual fee unless waived, unless issued as Lifetime FreeYES BANK POP-CLUB — MITC (5 Oct 2026): joining NIL, annual INR 399 (ex-GST), waived at INR 1,50,000 spend in the 12 months before the anniversary. Same MITC: those fees “are not applicable for Lifetime Free cards”. The product page marketed a “lifetime free offer”.
First-year fee reversed as rewardsA joining/renewal fee is published; welcome points match that fee if you meet the welcome ruleTata Neu Infinity HDFC — ₹1,499 + taxes, with 1,499 NeuCoins as reversal of the first-year fee after the first transaction within 30 days (claim in-app within 60 days). Tata Neu Plus: ₹499 / 499 NeuCoins.
Paid card with a spend waiverYou pay joining/renewal unless you spend enough that yearSwiggy HDFC — ₹500 + applicable charges, waived at ₹2,00,000 (cash on call, balance transfer and cash withdrawal excluded). BOBCARD Etihad Guest — ₹2,500 + GST, waived at ₹3,00,000 each anniversary year.

Use the table as a decoder, not a ranking. A paid card can still make sense if rewards on your spending beat the fee (see Tata Neu Plus vs Infinity). An LTF card is a poor fit if most of your spend earns nothing, or if you revolve a balance.

Scapia: a published lifetime-free example

The Federal Bank Scapia Credit Card is the clearest LTF example among cards we can link. The Key Fact Sheet (version 11, 30 Apr 2026) lists joining fees Nil, annual membership fees Nil and Nil add-on joining/annual fees. The product page and Scapia’s explainer (26 May 2026, re-read 8 Nov 2026) both say zero joining and zero annual fees. Apply Now opens the Scapia journey through our partner network — check the terms shown there. Federal Bank decides approval and credit limit.

Airport privilegesUnlock after ₹20,000 spend in the preceding month / billing cycle. Activate in the app before you pay

Because coins redeem at 5 = ₹1, a 10% Visa earn is about 2% in travel value if you redeem on Scapia, and a 20% app-booking earn is about 4% — arithmetic from published rates, not a guarantee. The explainer says you do not earn coins on Visa spends under ₹20, RuPay spends under ₹500, EMIs, card bill payments, fuel, late fees or other card charges, rent, ATM cash, forex, e-wallet loads, crypto, education and school fees, gift cards, insurance premiums, and utility and telecom bills above ₹20,000 a month. Forex spend can have 0% mark-up but usually earns no coins.

Scapia’s pages disagreed on the international-terminal unlock: the homepage said up to ₹2,000 back after every ₹40,000 international flight booking on the app (effective 27 Feb 2026); the explainer said a flight of ₹50,000 or more. Confirm in the app. Onboarding is digital; the virtual card can be activated immediately and the physical card typically arrives in 2–5 days. The product page lists resident Indian citizens, salaried applicants aged 21–65 and self-employed applicants aged 25–65. More detail: our Scapia benefits guide.

YES BANK POP-CLUB: zero joining fee — and a “lifetime free offer” to check

YES BANK’s POP-CLUB card shows why “free” is not one word. On 8 Nov 2026 the official product-page title was “Get POP Club Credit Card Lifetime Free with UPI & POPcoins Rewards”, and the description spoke of a “lifetime free offer”. That is YES BANK’s own marketing on yes.bank.in.

The credit-card MITC (CMITC_V18_05102026, dated 5 Oct 2026) still prints a standard POP-CLUB schedule: joining fee NIL, annual fee INR 399 (ex-GST), no joining-fee waiver (NA), and INR 1,50,000 spend in the 12 months before the anniversary to waive the annual fee. Under the table it says joining and annual fees “are not applicable for Lifetime Free cards”.

  • If your application is under the lifetime free offer the product page was advertising, the MITC footnote says those two fees would not apply.
  • If you are issued on the standard schedule, there is no joining fee, but INR 399 + GST can be charged unless you spend INR 1,50,000 in the 12 months before the anniversary.

Apply Now opens YES BANK’s POP-CLUB journey through our partner network. Read the fee and offer name on that screen — YES BANK decides approval, limit and which version it issues. We are not quoting POPcoins earn rates, because we could not extract a complete official reward table from the product page in this run.

Other MITC charges still apply. Finance charges for “Other Credit Cards” are 3.99% per month (47.88% a year). POP-CLUB foreign-currency conversion is listed at 3.40%, and 3.50% effective 15 June 2026. Dynamic currency conversion is 1% + GST. From 1 June 2026, a 1% fuel surcharge waiver applies on POP-CLUB transactions between INR 1,000 and INR 3,500, capped at INR 100 per statement cycle; GST on any fuel surcharge is not waived.

What still costs money on a “free” card

A Nil joining line does not switch off interest (Scapia 45% p.a.; YES BANK “Other Credit Cards” 3.99% a month / 47.88% a year), cash-advance fees, late-payment charges, replacement fees (₹200 + GST on Scapia), or forex (0% on Scapia; 3.50% from 15 June 2026 on POP-CLUB, plus 1% + GST on dynamic currency conversion). Fuel, rent, wallet loads and utilities may earn nothing or attract extra fees — read the bank PDF first.

Lounge access is easy to misunderstand too. Scapia’s airport privileges unlock only after about ₹20,000 spend in the preceding month or billing cycle, and you must activate them in the app before you pay at the airport.

Who should consider which option

  • You want published nil + nil fees and you book travel. Scapia is the straightforward LTF fit among cards we can link, if you will redeem coins in the Scapia app. Apply Now, then re-read the in-app terms.
  • You want zero joining fee and will read the offer screen. POP-CLUB currently advertises a lifetime-free offer, while the MITC still prints ₹399 + GST with a ₹1.5 lakh waiver. Apply Now only after you see which version the journey offers.
  • You can clear a published spend waiver. Tata Neu Plus (₹1 lakh), Swiggy HDFC (₹2 lakh), Tata Neu Infinity or BOBCARD Etihad Guest (₹3 lakh) can cost ₹0 in year two if you hit those numbers. Those are fee-plus-waiver cards, not LTF cards.
  • You often revolve a balance, pay rent or load wallets, or you will not redeem Scapia Coins. An LTF sticker will not make those habits cheap.

Pay the full statement by the due date. Approval, limit and the exact variant — including whether a lifetime-free offer applies — are decided only by the issuing bank. This is not a recommendation to take any card.

Frequently asked questions

What does a lifetime free credit card mean in India?

It means the bank’s published fee table lists a nil joining fee and a nil annual or membership fee, and you do not have to hit a yearly spend to keep those two fees at zero. Late-payment charges, cash-advance fees, interest if you revolve, replacement fees, GST and (on many cards) forex mark-up can still apply. Read the latest Key Fact Sheet or MITC, not only the ad.

Is the Federal Bank Scapia credit card lifetime free?

Federal Bank’s Key Fact Sheet (version 11, 30 Apr 2026) lists joining fees and annual membership fees as Nil, and add-on joining/annual fees as Nil. Scapia’s own explainer also states zero joining fees and zero annual fees. Other KFS charges — including 45% p.a. revolving interest, cash-advance fees and a ₹200 + GST replacement fee — still apply.

Is the YES BANK POP-CLUB credit card lifetime free?

YES BANK’s product page on 8 Nov 2026 marketed a “lifetime free offer”. The bank’s MITC dated 5 Oct 2026 (CMITC_V18) lists POP-CLUB with a NIL joining fee and an annual fee of INR 399 (exclusive of GST), waived if you spend INR 1,50,000 in the 12 months before the card anniversary. The same MITC says joining and annual fees are not applicable for Lifetime Free cards. Check the fee shown in your application.

Is a first-year-free card the same as lifetime free?

No. First-year free, or a joining fee reversed as welcome points, still starts from a published fee. Tata Neu Infinity lists a ₹1,499 + taxes joining/renewal fee and credits 1,499 NeuCoins as reversal of the first-year fee if you transact within 30 days. From year two the fee can return unless you meet the spend waiver (₹3 lakh on Infinity, ₹1 lakh on Plus).

Do lifetime free credit cards charge forex or interest?

They can. Scapia publishes 0% foreign-currency mark-up and 45% p.a. interest if you do not pay in full. YES BANK’s MITC lists POP-CLUB foreign-currency conversion at 3.50% from 15 June 2026 (3.40% in the earlier column) and finance charges of 3.99% a month (47.88% a year) for “Other Credit Cards”. An LTF label does not switch interest off.

Which lifetime free credit card should I apply for?

That depends on how you spend and which offer the bank actually issues you. Among cards we can link, Scapia is the one whose official KFS publishes nil joining and nil annual fees; POP-CLUB has a nil joining fee on the MITC and may be offered as lifetime free — confirm on the application screen. This is not financial advice. Federal Bank and YES BANK alone decide approval, limit and terms.
