Best Time to Book Domestic Flights in India: Rules That Actually Help

What is the best time to book domestic flights in India? Everyone has a theory: Tuesday night, incognito mode, exactly 47 days before. We wanted something firmer, so we read what the Ministry of Civil Aviation told Parliament about how fares work, DGCA’s refund rules, and the change and cancellation fees on IndiGo’s and Air India’s own websites. This guide sticks to what those pages actually say.

Short version: there is no magic day, but there is a clear pattern. Fares sit in buckets, cheap buckets sell out first, and a 48-hour free change window now makes early booking much less risky. Below we explain each piece, then give a simple booking plan. When you’re ready, compare dates on our flight search; it opens your search on Trip.com, where you see live fares and book.

Quick answer

Book as early as your plans allow, especially for festival and holiday dates. The Ministry of Civil Aviation says Indian airlines sell seats in fare buckets, and as the cheaper buckets sell out, the fare moves up. If your trip is more than 7 days away and you book on the airline’s own website or app, DGCA’s 48-hour look-in option lets you cancel or change for no extra fee (you only pay any fare difference). That means booking early costs you very little if plans move in the first two days. Within 7 days of departure there’s no look-in, so choose the fare type carefully.

How domestic airfares in India actually move

Airfares in India aren’t set by the government. In replies in the Lok Sabha in July and August 2026, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said airlines fix fares themselves under Rule 135 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, based on things like seat occupancy, fuel costs, aircraft capacity, season and demand.

The useful part for travellers is how MoCA describes the system: airline pricing “runs in multiple levels (buckets or RBDs)”, the lower fare is available for advance booking, and as the travel date gets closer “the fare moves to higher buckets, since lower buckets fare get sold out.” Think of it like cinema tickets released in price slabs. Once the cheapest slab is gone, it doesn’t come back just because you waited.

MoCA also added a fair caveat in another reply: dynamic pricing can at times give cheaper fares close to departure, depending on market conditions. So late bargains do happen, but they aren’t something you can plan a family wedding trip around.

Who keeps an eye on fares?

DGCA runs a Tariff Monitoring Unit that checks fares on 78 selected routes (72 domestic, 6 international) every month using airline websites, to make sure airlines don’t charge outside the fare range they have declared. MoCA says the 72 domestic routes cover about 27% of domestic traffic. If you feel you were charged an unfair fare, there is an “Air Fare” grievance module on the AirSewa platform, which MoCA says has been live since July 2025.

So when should you book?

Based on the bucket system above, the practical answer is: as soon as your dates are fixed. The closer you get to departure, the more of the cheap buckets on your flight may already be sold. That matters most when lots of people want the same seats at the same time.

Book earliest for these dates

  • Festivals and long weekends – Diwali, Chhath, Holi, Christmas–New Year and any three-day weekend. MoCA itself mentions peak and festive periods in its replies, and says early booking helps passengers find lower fares even then.
  • School vacations – summer and winter breaks, when families travel together and need several seats on one flight.
  • Popular leisure routes in season – for example Goa or Kerala in winter, or hill destinations in summer.
  • Group bookings – four or six seats on one PNR use up cheap buckets faster than one seat does.

Where you can wait a bit

On busy business routes with many daily flights, there are more seats overall, so prices may not climb as steeply. Even there, we haven’t found any official study showing a fixed “best number of days” before departure, so we won’t give you one. Treat any blog that quotes an exact magic number with care.

Day of the week and time of day

There’s no official data saying a particular booking day or hour is cheaper in India. What does help is being flexible with your travel date: flying a day earlier or later, or picking an early-morning or late-night flight, can put you on a less crowded flight with cheaper buckets still open. Our flight search lets you try different dates quickly; prices load live on Trip.com.

The 48-hour look-in rule: book early without the fear

The biggest reason people delay booking is “what if my plans change?” DGCA’s revised refund rules answer a lot of that. Under CAR Section 3, Series M, Part II (Revision 3, dated 24 February 2026, effective 26 March 2026), airlines must give a “Look-in option” for 48 hours after booking. In that window you can cancel or amend the ticket without any additional charges, except the normal fare difference if you move to a costlier flight. DGCA’s Air Transport Circular 03 of 2026 notes this was earlier 24 hours.

Rule (DGCA CAR, Rev 3)What it means for you
48-hour look-inCancel or change for no extra fee within 48 hours of booking; pay only any fare difference on a change.
When it doesn’t applyDomestic flights departing less than 7 days from the booking date (15 days for international), when booked directly on the airline website.
Name correctionNo extra charge to correct the same person’s name if you point it out within 24 hours of booking on the airline website.
Refund to credit cardWithin 7 days of cancellation.
Booked via agent or portalThe airline is responsible for the refund; it must be completed within 14 working days.
Taxes and airport feesStatutory taxes and UDF/ADF/PSF must be refunded on cancellation or no-show, even on non-refundable and promo fares.
Credit shellKeeping your refund as a credit shell is your choice, not the airline’s default.

IndiGo’s fees page states the same 48-hour look-in for tickets booked on IndiGo’s website, with the same 7-day (domestic) exclusion. Air India’s refund page says changes or cancellations are free for up to 48 hours from booking in the India and US markets, as long as it is done up to 7 days before the first flight.

Booked on a travel site?

DGCA’s circular says these look-in and name-correction provisions apply to bookings on the airline’s own website or app, because DGCA regulates airlines, not travel agents. It adds that airlines should make sure agents and online portals follow these passenger rules through their contracts. In practice, if you book on a travel site, read that site’s cancellation terms on the payment page before you pay.

How to use it

Once your dates are roughly fixed and the flight is more than a week away, book the fare that looks fine. Over the next 48 hours, confirm leave, check with family, and look at the fare again. If something changes, you can cancel or move the booking without a fee (a change still costs any fare difference). After 48 hours, the normal fare rules apply, so set a phone reminder.

Fare type matters as much as booking date

A cheap ticket can become expensive if you need to change it later. Here is what IndiGo and Air India list on their own pages for domestic flights (amounts in ₹, as shown on the airline pages we read on 2 Nov 2026; check the fare rules at booking, which are final).

IndiGo domesticChange feeCancellation fee

IndiGo UpFrontNil999 (72 hours+); 1,599 (3–72 hours)
Lite3,4994,299 (72 hours+); 4,999 (3–72 hours)

IndiGo’s Lite fare has no free check-in baggage; a 15 kg check-in bag on domestic sectors is listed at ₹2,000 whether you pre-book it or pay at the airport. IndiGo also adds up to ₹500 per person per sector if you cancel through its call centre, so cancel online where you can.

Air India’s page also says the cancellation charge can’t be more than the basic fare plus fuel surcharge (as per the DGCA CAR), taxes are refundable on a no-show, and a ticket can be refunded within two years of issue. A no-show there means you didn’t change or cancel at least 2 hours before a domestic departure.

Which fare should you pick?

If your dates are firm and the trip is more than a week away, the cheapest fare plus the 48-hour look-in usually covers you. If you’re booking within 7 days, or your plans could still move after two days (a work trip, a medical visit, an exam date), compare the extra cost of a flexible fare with the change fee you might pay. Sometimes the flexible fare is the cheaper choice overall.

A simple booking plan

  1. Fix your dates first, with one or two backup dates.
  2. Search early on our flight search and try nearby dates and times. If you prefer, you can also check Cleartrip flights or go straight to Trip.com flights.
  3. Compare fare types, not just the price: baggage, change fee and cancellation fee.
  4. If the flight is more than 7 days away, book directly with the airline if you want the DGCA look-in protection, or read the travel site’s terms if you book there.
  5. Use the 48 hours to confirm plans, and double-check the passenger name within the first 24 hours.
  6. Book the hotel next. Once the flight is set, search stays on our hotel search, and add tours or day trips from tours & activities if you need them.

What about actual fares?

We don’t show fares on this page. They change every hour with demand, so any number we printed would be out of date by the time you read it. For live prices, check current prices on the flight search, which opens on Trip.com with your cities and dates already filled in. The price, payment, changes and refunds all happen on the booking site or with the airline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to book domestic flights in India?

As early as your dates are fixed. The Ministry of Civil Aviation says airlines sell seats in fare buckets and the fare moves to higher buckets as cheaper ones sell out closer to the travel date. Book earliest for festivals, long weekends and school holidays.

Can I cancel a flight ticket for free within 48 hours in India?

Yes, under DGCA's look-in option you can cancel or change within 48 hours of booking without extra charges (you pay any fare difference on a change). It doesn't apply to domestic flights departing less than 7 days from the booking date when booked on the airline website, and DGCA says the rule covers bookings on airline websites and apps.

Is booking at the last minute cheaper in India?

Sometimes, but you can't count on it. MoCA says dynamic pricing can at times give cheaper fares close to departure depending on market conditions, but in general the fare moves up as lower buckets sell out. Last-minute bookings within 7 days also don't get the 48-hour look-in.

How much does it cost to change an IndiGo Saver ticket?

IndiGo's fees page lists a change fee of ₹3,499 for domestic Saver fares, plus any fare difference. Flexi Plus is ₹299 if changed 72 hours or more before departure and ₹999 within 3–72 hours.

How long does a flight ticket refund take?

Under the DGCA CAR, refunds to a credit card must be made within 7 days of cancellation, and for tickets bought through an agent or portal the airline must complete the refund within 14 working days.

Can I correct my name on a flight ticket for free?

Yes, if it's the same person and you point out the error within 24 hours of booking on the airline website, DGCA says the airline can't charge extra for the correction.
